How
does a public venue change the creation and perception
of a piece of art? Whether officially supported or
wholly unsanctioned, how is art in public shaped by
its context? Part seminar on what constitutes "public
art" and part studio where students develop real-life
interventions in their local communities, this course
explores artwork and ideas in the public realm. Discussion
covers the theory and history of art in public spaces,
including monuments, murals, earthworks, activist art,
community-based programs, and guerilla interventions.
